jkOnTheRun has an interesting news tidbit…Elan, a memory systems manufacturer, has designed a device that interfaces with a microsd card slot, and gives you a USB port for use with a standard USB memory pen/key.

Called the MobiDapter, you can check out a short video and explanation here. Theoretically, a wonderful device, right?

Not so fast…let us analyze this.

1) This device, obviously, requires the slot to be externally located- most phones on the market do NOT have such slots.
2) This assumes that you are not familiar with the following option-
Why not simply buy a 16GB microSD card ($43 @ Amazon), plus a mobile card reader ($2 @ Amazon) for a total of $45? This ends up being:
A) Arguably much cheaper- assuming that the Expansys UK price of 37 GBP ($60) will be the shipping price.
B) Definitely much more portable.
C) Much simpler- instead of lugging around 3 devices (phone/MobiDapter/memory key), you’d only be carrying around 2 (phone/mem card reader).
